From awareness-raising initiatives launched by non-governmental organizations to the environmental policies of the European Union, and from the world of cinema to the literature in the natural sciences, indeed, one of the most exciting topics of the last decade, which often brings us to the same table in numerous debates, is the impact of climate change.
At the same time, while education is the foundation of all good habits, including understanding and mitigating the effects of climate change, this topic has also become a growing concern in school settings. Including sustainable development education courses, whether mandatory or optional, is a first step in preparing an informed civil society. We must all instill the best ideas, principles, and best practices from one generation to the next, just as it is essential to listen to each other.
Why talk about climate change?
The latest Eurobarometer survey reveals that EU citizens remain deeply concerned about climate change and strongly support ambitious climate policies.
A large majority of Europeans recognize climate change as a critical issue, with 85% considering it a serious problem and 81% supporting the EU’s goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Citizens believe that addressing climate change can improve public health and quality of life, with 85% emphasizing its importance and nearly 4 in 10 feeling personally exposed to environmental risks.
Europeans also strongly support initiatives to increase renewable energy and improve energy efficiency, with 88% backing actions such as insulating homes and installing solar panels. Additionally, 75% agree that reducing fossil fuel imports will enhance energy security and economic benefits for the EU. Public support extends to fostering innovation and boosting European companies in the clean tech market, with over 84% advocating for more backing of domestic industries. While most citizens actively make sustainable choices individually, they see national governments (66%), the EU (59%), and industry (58%) as the primary actors responsible for tackling climate change.
Despite widespread awareness that climate change is human-induced, over half of Europeans believe that media and social media often lack precise and reliable information on the topic.
What is climate change?
With each unusual meteorological phenomenon and each deviation from the recorded values compared to the average period, the planet is indirectly sending us a message that it is asserting its rights. Year by year, we are increasingly feeling these imbalances more intensely through the disappearance of transitional seasons due to global warming. This is a brief description of climate change.
To deepen our understanding of climate change, we will now examine its causes and impacts in more detail. We may not all have the expertise to predict the losses, but we feel the effects deeply. So, finally, we will outline what the solution to climate change is.
Impacts of climate change
Data show that the planet has warmed by more than 1°C compared to pre-industrialization temperatures. Additionally, extreme weather events are also linked to climate change. Droughts, floods, heatwaves, and acid rain cause the most significant damage to nature, and consequently, to households. Thus, the impacts of climate change are not only limited to losses in the natural ecosystem but also have a domino effect, including on the economy and health.
What is causing climate change?
Human activity is by far the leading cause of these environmental anomalies. Global warming is caused by greenhouse gas emissions, mainly from rudimentary agricultural practices, deforestation, and the burning of fossil fuels for transportation, electricity generation, and heating and cooling systems.
What are the effects of climate change?
The consequences of climate change are also reflected in trophic relationships and increased frequency of extreme weather events. Biodiversity is crucial in the fight against global warming, particularly in its role in absorbing greenhouse gases. Its decline invariably has many adverse effects throughout the natural ecosystem; viruses, pests, species decline, and extinction are just some of the impacts of climate change. If non-living things suffer, we will not be able to thrive.
What is the solution to climate change?
The planet's warming is a response to the waste of resources in all areas of activity and most everyday actions. So, the ‘price’ we pay for a shortfall of information and often unreasonable consumption behavior is far too high. That is why we all need a strong voice and representative role models, teachers, parents, and opinion-formers who can 'set us straight' from an early age and guide us by the power of example.
In this context, all that remains for us to do is to maintain a permanent balance in using alternative energy, transportation, and cultivation methods, as well as reducing resource consumption, thereby having a minimal impact on ecosystems while achieving a more significant effect on health and well-being.
The effects of climate change so far are irreversible, but we can minimize their impact in the future. By proactively protecting the environment and adopting a sustainable lifestyle, we can quickly identify the causes of our declining planet and find solutions to climate change. Last but not least, it would be helpful from time to time to take a less anxious but more critical look at ‘the planet's health’ based on the statistics and reports of relevant NGOs.
What can we do as a society to ameliorate these effects?
Addressing Climate Change as a Society: The Power of Collective Responsibility
Promote and adopt sustainable transportation. Encouraging the use of public transit, cycling, walking, and electric vehicles through the power of example will urge authorities to invest in infrastructure that supports these options, thereby significantly reducing emissions from transportation.
Reduce resource consumption. By fostering a culture of mindful consumption (reducing waste, reusing products, and recycling materials), we can all promote minimalist lifestyles in our circles of family and friends, which can help decrease the overall environmental impact.
For example, based on the European Comission study on the use of recycled materials launched at the end of 2024, 'almost 12% of materials in the EU came from recycling’. In 2023, the circularity rate was highest in the Netherlands (30.6%), followed by Italy (20.8%) and Malta (19.8%). Unfortunately, the lowest rate was recorded in Romania (1.3%).
3. Transition to renewable energy. Transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources, including wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal. Supporting policies that incentivize renewable energy development and adoption should be a priority, not just an option. Moreover, a complementary step is advocating for policies that limit emissions, protect natural ecosystems, and promote sustainable development. International cooperation is essential to address the global nature of climate change.
Implement sustainable agriculture and land use. Adopt practices that reduce resource consumption, preserve biodiversity, and enhance soil health. Supporting local and organic food systems can also minimize carbon footprints.
Foster community engagement. Local initiatives and community-based projects can create scalable change and increase resilience to climate impacts.
How can a PR agency help you promote your start-up in the field of sustainability?
In addition to promoting your business in the press and on social media networks to reach as many potential customers as possible, it is also important to join and stand out in communities whose members pursue a common denominator - protecting the environment.
A PR agency could be a good entry point for building sustainable relationships between decision-makers in public authorities, entrepreneurs in your field, and journalists covering environmental issues. You can create plans and implement measures to protect the environment by organizing offline debates. Moreover, you can educate the general public in this direction by organizing online webinars. Education for sustainable development begins at home; learning continues at school and in universities, and is fostered within circles of common interest.
We are all responsible for laying a brick to build a future in communion with nature and make the environment a better place for future generations. This is our promise, and we hope most of you will join us!
To demonstrate our commitment to environmental health, JUNE is actively involved in two European projects focused on soil protection and restoration, for which we are responsible for communication and dissemination activities, reflecting our dedication to sustainable solutions.
InBestSoil's goal is to develop an economic valuation system of the ecosystem services provided by healthy soil, assess the impacts of soil interventions, and incorporate this information into business models and incentives. It encourages public and private organizations to invest in soil health and create products, services, and value chains that are less harmful to the soil.
BIOservicES aims to quantify the scaling potential and impacts of soil sustainability innovations, recognizing the importance of private investment and institutional arrangements in conserving soil health. The project will assign monetary values to marketed and non-marketed ecosystem services associated with soil organisms. This approach aims to overcome barriers to transitioning towards sustainable land management reliant on healthy soils with high biodiversity.
Their common effort led to the launch of the Soil Community Platform, funded by the European Commission. This is an online collaborative space designed to encourage cross-project collaboration and advance efforts in key areas, including policy recommendations, innovative business models, soil health indicators, and monitoring practices. By signing up on the platform, you can re-watch the webinars organized this year, marking the first steps in a long series of initiatives to advance soil health.
Ultimately, combating climate change requires a collective shift toward sustainability, driven by informed decision-making, responsible behavior, and proactive policies. Each individual, community, and government has a role to play in safeguarding our planet for future generations. We can all make our contribution to a healthier planet and a better climate!
